➤ The sustainable main material: banana fibers
Banana fibre is a natural, untreated plant fibre with a wonderfully natural feel. This abundant, renewable resource comes from banana trees, which are widely cultivated in Indonesia. The fibrous bark is separated from the trunk as it grows, then collected and dried in the sun for about a week, naturally developing its intense brown colour. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6mm thick strands, which are processed into traditional basketry by our production partners in Java.

When selecting our local production partners, we focus on fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftsmen of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, which allows them to use the skills they have learned from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are that they can create something meaningful with this work and earn a good income. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process produces hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee all this through regular site visits and continuous personal contact with the companies.
➤ The production process: from raw material to finished wall decoration
For our wall decorations, the experienced craftsmen of our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java weave the banana fibres with great patience and skill into a hand-formed frame of thin iron rods. This ensures that they retain their stable, round shape. The filigree star pattern of white cotton is then embroidered with a needle. In total, making a wall decoration takes about two hours.
